Germans are against Berlin’s military and diplomatic intervention in international crises
The results of a survey show that most German citizens are against their government's military and diplomatic intervention in international crises and playing a leadership role in this field. |
The world has been involved in many crises for years. However, according to most German citizens, the country’s role in this situation should be as small as possible. The results of this survey show that the majority of citizens only want to continue supporting Ukraine. This result is based on a survey about Germany’s foreign and security policy conducted by the Korber Institute. According to this survey, the majority of German citizens (57%) believe that Germany’s influence in the world has increased in the last two years. Dropped. At the same time, 54 percent of the survey participants would like Germany to exercise more restraint in international crises. Only 38 percent want Germany to be more involved diplomatically. This is the lowest number since the poll began in 2017.
Opinions on military responsibility are similarly mixed. Based on this, 71% of the participants in this survey answered the question whether Germany should assume the role of military leadership in Europe. Only 28 percent agreed with this issue. This is the result of a major rejection and in stark contrast to the special fund for the Bundeswehr proposed by Germany’s so-called traffic light coalition government, as well as the defense minister’s statement that the country must prepare for war.
Nonetheless, most Germans still see an increase in the defense budget as important. 72% of those surveyed agree with the goal of spending at least two percent of GDP on defense in line with the NATO agreement. 26% of those surveyed consider even this too low.
Germany has so far not met NATO’s requested budget level. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, German chancellor Olaf Schultz promised a special budget for the German military, which should significantly increase the defense budget in the future. Germans, although not in favor of military operations, at least seem to agree with the question of increasing the budget in this field.
The results of this poll also show that Germans continue to support Ukraine with similar views. They look like the defense budget. Two-thirds of German citizens support the provision of arms to the country attacked by Russia, even two years after the start of the war. Of these, 54 percent stated that German military aid was to help retake Russian-controlled territories. 41% believe that Germany’s support should primarily prevent Russia from advancing further.
The results of this survey also show that the attitude of Germans towards Russia remains negative. A majority of Germans (86 percent) agree that the Russian government under Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted. Three-quarters (76 percent) also feel militarily threatened by Russia.
The view of German citizens towards the People’s Republic of China is similarly bleak: 62 percent of those surveyed are influenced by Beijing increasingly views world events negatively. At 60 percent, the majority of respondents also believe that German companies should reduce their dependence on China – even if this means economic losses and job losses.
The results of the survey also It shows that if Donald Trump is re-elected as the next US president next fall, the positive attitude of citizens towards transatlantic relations could be reversed: 82% of Germans think that this will have a negative impact on trans-Atlantic relations. The Atlantic will have.
This poll was conducted among more than a thousand eligible voters in Germany.
