The EU is desperately trying to reach an agreement on asylum by Christmas

While the European Union wants to approve the rules of the new EU asylum system to solve this crisis before Christmas, there are still many differences between the institutions and members of the European Union.

According to Webangah News quoted by Tasnim News agency, Stuttgarter newspaper In an article referring to the continuation of the differences over the issue of refugees in the European Union, Nakhreshtan wrote: The European Union wants to approve the rules of the new asylum system before Christmas, but the success in this process is uncertain because the opinions and ideas of the members are very far from each other. .

This article continues: The European Union is now eagerly looking towards England. However, for once Brexit is no longer the focus. This time, the issue of asylum policy or more precisely the so-called solution of Rwanda is discussed. In the future, London wants to deport migrants entering the East African country to check asylum procedures there. The High Court, the UK’s highest court, has already banned it, citing constitutional flaws in Rwanda, but the Conservative government still wants to do the deal.

But excitement is high in the European Union, not only because there is a risk that the British will even leave the European Convention on Human Rights to avoid a legal defeat at the Strasbourg court, but also because London’s approach is being carefully watched in Brussels, to Especially because the European Union itself wants to approve the reform of the asylum law before Christmas. In the meantime, a kind of Rwandan solution is also being discussed, which has been discussed by some EU member states, but due to high resistance – including from Germany – there is little chance of its implementation.

It continues: Work to reform EU asylum law has been underway for years, and the pressure to succeed is now enormous. Negotiating circles say: We cannot tolerate failure, such a failure will be grist for Europe’s enemies.

The success of far-right parties, including in Italy, Scandinavia and recently the Netherlands have caused a lot of concern in the EU. There is hope in Brussels that an agreement on a Common European Asylum System (GEAS) could prevent a power shift to the right in June’s European elections.

But Time is very important and short, and that is why negotiations are going on these days. At the beginning of the week, the ministers of the European Union met in Brussels, and then the ambassadors of the European Union coordinated their positions in the initial talks, and three high-risk talks about the refugee and migration agreement are on the agenda for Thursday. These negotiations are conducted tripartitely between the representatives of the European Parliament, each member state of the European Union and the Commission. The discussion on the central legal texts started early this morning and is not expected to end before midnight. All sides are emphasized. But the definition of solidarity varies from government to government. Many countries refuse to accept asylum seekers from countries on their external borders – as requested by the EU Parliament. Now the financial compensation mechanism is discussed. Accordingly, anyone who does not meet their quota must pay a fee of €20,000 for each person who is not accepted. But this plan has also been strongly rejected by Hungary.

It is possible to find a common position on the establishment of mandatory border procedures. This essentially makes it impossible for asylum seekers to move to another country or submit multiple applications for asylum, which was previously common. Also, this plan makes the deportation process easier.

Concerns about such border procedures have been expressed many times, especially in the parliament. Birgit Seipel, a Social Democratic member of the European Parliament, stressed that the past few years have clearly shown that asylum centers at external borders do not usually meet EU standards. There is also some debate about whether families with minor children should go through this procedure. EU countries initially only wanted an exception for children under the age of twelve, but failed to get their hard line through parliament.

However, there is little hope. That agreement on a Common European Asylum System (GEAS) will indeed be announced after Thursday’s marathon meeting. To be sure, the negotiation date has been rescheduled for December 18.
