Israel is no longer the Jewish safe house
Population and migration to occupied Palestine is one of the pillars of security for Israel; Rokni, who was affected by internal political-social differences over judicial reforms, received a blow with the events of October 7 (Tufan al-Aqsa). |

The view of the Zionist movement during the establishment of Israel was mainly categorized into two general views; First, the establishment of a national homeland; Second, establishing a refuge and shelter for oppressed Jews around the world. Maybe there was a third group who said, why doesn’t Israel achieve both goals at the same time? The national compatriot should also be a refuge for Jews scattered around the world, to gather in it.
In other words, when “Moses Montefiori”, a British-Italian Jewish merchant in the 19th century (1827) He traveled to the region of Shammat and Palestine, in a few years, using British support, and taking advantage of the unstable economic situation of the Ottoman court, he was able to obtain permission to sell land to Jews for the first time. Due to internal conflicts as well as conflicts with Russia, the Ottoman government needed economic income and also sought the support of some European countries. Therefore, in 1849, exactly one hundred years before the establishment of Israel, the first decree of the Ottoman court was issued that Jews could buy land in the Holy Land. After that, Montefiore established the first ghetto outside of Jerusalem, and finally in 1869, that decree became the Law of Acquisition of Foreigners. , needs land to cultivate in it and gain political and economic independence, together with his colleagues, he laid the first cornerstones of the occupation of Palestine a hundred years before the establishment of Israel, relying on the “immigration” and “migration” of the Jews. they put Another reason for the efforts of the likes of Montefiore was to create a kind of refuge for Jews to be safe from the persecution of others, especially Christians. The world began to migrate to Palestine. Of course, wherever they succeeded, they were invited to migrate; Wherever they failed to attract, they moved. Palestinian thinker, writer and poet Ms. “Salafa Hajjawi” says in the book “Soviet Jews” published in 1980, the Zionist movement resorted to fake terrorist events in order to move Jews to Palestine, such as the events of 1881 in Russia or actions during the war. World War II in Germany and Eastern Europe; What he did in Arab countries such as Iraq, Maghreb and Yemen to increase Jewish immigration, but in reality it was a forced migration. Some believe that part of the stories and adventures of anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany was actually a joint show to move as many Jews as possible to Palestine. Therefore, after the establishment of Israel, some Zionist leaders such as “Zeev Vladimir Zybutinsky” (born in Ukraine) believed that “the return of the Jewish nation to its homeland is more important than the establishment”. They interpreted forced migration as return so that they could encourage more people to immigrate to Palestine.
The importance of migration to Palestine does not end here. David Ben-Gurion (the first prime minister), one of the founders of Israel, who himself is considered to be from the second wave of immigration to Palestine, was in favor of unlimited immigration to Palestine because when the immigration of 625 thousand people from 1940 to 1948, in the early 50s of the 20th century, it increased to one million. And three hundred thousand people arrived, stopping those who said that immigration should be limited; He was also in favor of the large birth of Jewish women; Accordingly, he set a reward of 100 lira for Jewish women who gave birth to 10 live children.
In addition, Ben-Gurion’s security doctrine, in the shadow of factors such as the transition from defense to attack, taking the initiative, not being satisfied with reaction and having action and relying on the air force, It was laid on this basis: 1- Strengthening Jewish immigration to Israel. 2- Sowing differences between Arab countries. 3- Blitzkrieg. 4- Guaranteed to receive help from a powerful ally. Therefore, you can see the importance of immigration and the prevention of reverse immigration in Israel’s security. /p>
This historical course and the importance of immigration for Israel were mentioned in order to say that after the October 7th incident, Israel is no longer considered safe and a safe home for Jews. In fact, the Al-Aqsa storm on October 7 is a three-pronged blow for Jews outside of Israel. First, the blow to the sense of internal security of the Israeli population. Second, the destruction of the image of Israel as the mighty invincible Israel and third, the blow to the image of Israel as a safe house. All these images collapsed on the morning of October 7th. The Israelis may not accept this and say that a military intelligence failure has occurred and will be compensated, but this is not the case. That’s not all. After the events of the judicial reforms, which divided the Zionist community in Israel for a few months, if we add to it the deepening of the weakness of Israel’s internal security, we should no longer expect high immigration to occupied Palestine. Mrs. Tova Herzl, the former ambassador of Israel to the Baltic countries and South Africa, wrote in a note in Yediot Aharonot, Israel did not send good messages to the Jews abroad before October 7th, during the internal disputes over the judicial reform plan, and many Jews said, coalitions Internal Jews are more important to the government than foreign Jews, so they stopped emigrating. Now, the events of October 7th have dealt the final blow to the Jews outside of Israel.
Of course, the current immigration statistics also confirm the blow to the pillar of immigration and security. The Israeli Ministry of Immigration and the Jewish Agency reported that the amount of immigration to occupied Palestine in the first six months of this year (2023) has experienced a sharp decrease of 20% (from America and Europe) compared to the first half of last year (2022). Israeli analysts, before October 7th, believed that the reason was the insecurity in the West Bank and the martyrdom operations of the Palestinians, and more importantly, the internal disputes over the judicial reform plan of the right-wing cabinet, which caused serious doubt in the hearts of all those who sought to immigrate to Israel.
Now, with the events of October 7th, not only is the decision to emigrate a Jew canceled, but the reverse immigration has also begun. According to the report of Zeman Israel newspaper, citing the Ministry of Immigration, since October 7th, about half a million Jews (470 thousand) have left occupied Palestine, and this number does not include foreign workers, asylum seekers, and diplomats who have left. It is still not clear how many of these half a million people emigrate permanently, because this is a question that many immigrants have said that they do not know whether they will return or not.
In the two months of the war, October and November The number of new immigration is less than two thousand people, which means almost a thousand people every month. Before the war, this number was 4500 people per month. Therefore, the 20% decrease in the first half of the year, after the Al-Aqsa storm, has decreased to 70% in the last three months. In addition, of the hundreds of thousands of Jews who went abroad on vacation, only 350,000 have returned. Some time ago, some economic reports in Israel believed that, contrary to expectations, immigration will increase in the shadow of the economic recession in Israel and the decrease in property prices. But the passage of time showed that those estimated numbers were not correct and the effect of the war is more than what was imagined.
However, it is still too early to make a final judgment on the statistics of permanent reverse migration. And the dust of the war has not settled yet, but what is certain is that Israel’s internal security is being called into question. The residents of the settlements adjacent to Gaza are not ready to simply return to their place of residence or if they return, they do not move or reverse migration. Therefore, in the current war, Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, in addition to saying that it wants to destroy Hamas (which America does not believe in achieving this goal), repeatedly talks about creating a buffer zone in Gaza in order to send the message to the residents of Gaza that we are We consider safe for you…; But it must be said, the effects of this war in Israeli society are beyond the imagination of the current leaders of Israel, and the passage of time will show this.
