The High and Independent Commissioner of Elections of Iraq announced on Saturday evening that the percentage of participation in the special elections of Iraqi provincial councils was 67% and unprecedented.

The special voting of the Iraqi military and security forces for the provincial council elections started on Saturday morning, and the general elections are scheduled to be held on Monday (December 18).

The official news agency of Iraq (WAA), with the release of this news, reported that the Independent High Commissioner of Elections of Iraq, describing the percentage of participation as unprecedented, announced that there were no security incidents in this election. At six o’clock in the evening on Saturday, after the participants in the elections cast their votes without any problems, the doors of the polling stations were closed. They participated in the provincial council elections and went to the ballot box. Before this, provincial council elections were held in Iraq in 2009, in 2018 and at the same time as the parliamentary elections, but were postponed many times.

The province was held out of 18 provinces of Iraq and 3 provinces of the Kurdistan region of Iraq were not included in this election according to the law of the federal government of this country. who have the right to issue local laws and, like a small government, they are responsible for the affairs of the province and the responsibility of monitoring the budget of the health, transportation and education sectors.

It is possible that one of the main demands of the protests of October 2019, which led to the resignation of the Iraqi government at the time, was the dissolution of the provincial councils and the holding of elections.
