According to the international group Tasnim News Agency, the German newspaper “Hamburger Abend Blatt” wrote in an article: While the German army suffers from a shortage of personnel, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is reviving the debate about conscription.

The article of this German newspaper: Thus, the debate on conscription is a seemingly endless debate. It is in Germany that it has gained a new momentum and has been personally addressed by the German Minister of Defense.

“Boris Pistorius”, the German Minister of Defense has announced that he has the so-called Swedish model in mind.

Currently, about 180,000 men and women are serving in this country, but the number of soldiers is supposed to increase to about 200,000 by 2031.

For this purpose, Pistorius now It is considering different models of compulsory service. But any model implemented, regardless of which one, also needs a political majority, and that’s exactly why it could fail, the German official said in an interview with the newspaper Die Welt. In any case, the opposition has already rejected the idea.

On the other hand, there is resistance to this Pistorius plan within the ranks of the federal government. The head of the parliamentary faction of the Liberal Democratic Party, Christian Dorr, said: “The conscription plan is a thing of the past.” He also said: “It is important to ensure that more young men and women want to be part of the German army again.” be, but it must be voluntary.
On the other hand, Durr suggested increasing the number of reserve posts as a plan for personnel shortages. According to him, the reserve forces can become a stronger component of a modern and powerful Bundeswehr with the participation of more practitioners and specialists.”

Compulsory military service in Germany was suspended in 2011 after 55 years. Shortly after becoming defense minister, Pistorius described it as a mistake, but one that cannot be corrected in the blink of an eye.

German Chancellor Olaf Schultz also discussed the return to conscription rejected it in February, but Pistorius now says there were reasons to suspend conscription at the time.
In retrospect, he said, it was a mistake.
He said reintroducing it now It will be structurally, constitutionally and politically difficult.
He added that this is why he is looking at other models.

Sweden also abolished conscription in 2010 like Germany, but in 2017 reintroduced it, since then it has generally been valid for twelve months. In this Scandinavian country, all men and women are conscripted, in fact, only a small fraction are eventually selected for initial military service. Due to this background and due to the small number of conscripts, military service in Sweden is more or less voluntary, according to which if one does not want to join the army, he has to do community service instead, this duty applies to both men and women. It’s the same.

The German defense minister said not long ago that, in general, Germans should be ready for a change of mentality.
He emphasized: The days of peace profits and low defense costs are over. Now we must be able to deter a potential aggressor again, and the Bundeswehr must be “war-worthy” whether everyone likes it or not.
