Will Sweden’s joining NATO coincide with the sale of fighter jets to Turkey?
Despite one and a half years since Biden's promise to Erdogan to sell F-16 fighters to Turkey, Ankara is still seeking Washington's consent for these fighters. |
According to the international group Tasnim News Agency, Hurriyet published a report on the latest status of Turkey’s request from America paid for F-16 fighter jets and Washington’s position.
This report states: Last week, Erdogan and Biden talked to each other on the phone, and Erdogan once again insisted on Turkey to get F-16 fighter jets. 16 emphasized. In this regard, a senior official in the White House said that, above all, Biden’s most important priority is Sweden’s accession to NATO. The US Congress is the most important person responsible for the sale of fighter jets, and one of the important considerations of some members of Congress for the sale of fighter jets to Turkey is the approval of Sweden’s accession to NATO by the country’s parliament.
Erdogan said that Biden in his conversation with him He said that you should approve the joining of Sweden to NATO in your parliament, and I will get permission from Congress to sell fighter jets to Turkey.
The US State Department announced that Washington has not yet announced to the Congress the official request for the purchase of 40 fighters and the modernization of 80 planes from Turkey. If, within 30 days after this request, Congress does not block the sale of the fighters, the sale is approved. But there are still doubts about the simultaneous actions of Turkey and the United States regarding the parliaments of both sides.
One of the possibilities is that after Sweden’s accession to NATO is approved in the Turkish Parliament, the US State Department will also make an official request to the Congress for the sale of fighter jets to Turkey. However, in this model, Sweden will join NATO, but the status of Turkey’s request will not be clear for at least 30 days.
This White House official said that Congress must see Sweden join NATO in order to approve this request.
In 2022, during the meeting with Erdogan in Madrid, Biden said that we should sell F-16 fighters to Turkey because it is not in our interest to not sell them, but we must have the approval of Congress for this action. A year and a half has passed since these statements, but no action has been taken in this regard. However, this White House official considers the sale of fighter jets to Turkey to increase NATO’s capability in the air sector.
