Holding local council elections in Tunisia under the shadow of party sanctions

Local council elections in Tunisia were held today while most of the country's parties have boycotted the said elections.

According to the international group Tasnim news, in the local council elections, 7 thousand 205 candidates from people Independent and supporting parties of Tunisian President Qais Said are competing with each other to win 2,155 seats in these councils.

Voting was opened at 8:00 AM (local time) for 9,79,000 Tunisians eligible to vote, and the voting process continues until 6:00 PM today. This voting does not include Tunisians living abroad.

According to Anatolia news agency, since 2022 when the Tunisian constitution was amended, this is the first election of local councils in Tunisia is considered.

According to the new law, by electing the members of the local councils, these councils elect the members of the provincial councils, then the provincial councils “Supreme Council” provinces” and this council will act as the second chamber of the parliament.
