The Vatican's special envoy for Ukraine emphasized the importance of China's role in the peace process between Moscow and Kiev. |
According to the report of Fars News Agency International Group, Cardinal “Matteo Zoppi”, the Vatican’s special envoy for Ukraine and the head of the Italian bishops’ conference, said in an interview that he believes China is an “important and inevitable source” that can help to resolve the war in Ukraine.
This Vatican special envoy said in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera: “Progress is being made in the process of resolving the war. I have had trips to Kiev and Moscow. I also went to Washington and Beijing. Both Russians and Ukrainians acknowledge the role of the Vatican in this process. The Vatican ambassadors are doing a wonderful job in both capitals. Of course, we would like to see more results in the return of Ukrainian children. We will not miss any opportunity for this purpose.
Matteo Zoppi said, he believes that weapons are not the only way to end the war.
This special envoy also stated that the Vatican supports the participation of the international community in the process of finding appropriate solutions and guaranteeing them. He said: “We need to get rid of the logic that military victory is the only option in Ukraine and that dialogue means surrender.” The issue includes the return of children from the war zones of Ukraine from Russia. As part of his mission, he traveled to Kiev, Moscow, Washington and Beijing in recent months. During his stay in Moscow at the end of June, he visited Yuriy Ushakov, assistant for foreign policy affairs of the President of Russia, Maria Levova Bellova, Commissioner for Children’s Rights of the President of the Russian Federation and the Archbishop of Moscow and Russia.
Russia has recently announced several times its readiness for peace talks with Ukraine, but Kiev’s opposition has made these talks impossible.
