America agrees to sell arms to Israel without congressional authorization
The US State Department has agreed to sell more weapons to Israel worth more than $147 million. |
According to Fars News Agency, the Pentagon announced that the US Department of State has approved the sale of M107 missiles and related equipment worth more than 147 million dollars to Israel.
In explaining the approval of this arms sale, the US State Department said that Israel is in an emergency situation that justifies the immediate sale to it.
The website of the CNN news network writes that the administration of US President Joe Biden has bypassed Congress to approve the sale of these weapons to Israel.
Anthony Blinken, the Secretary of State of the Biden administration, informed the Congress that he agreed to the transfer of these weapons to Israel due to the recognition of the emergency situation.
A spokesperson for the US State Department said: “Given the urgency of Israel’s defense needs, the Secretary of State has informed Congress that he has exercised his authority and deemed it necessary to send this equipment immediately.” “
Joe Biden’s government had previously approved the sale of another package of weapons to the Israeli regime this month without obtaining permission from Congress.
This is despite the fact that many of the weapons sent by America to Israel since the beginning of the war in Gaza have been secretly.
About a month ago, the Wall Street Journal revealed in an exclusive report that America provided Israel with massive mortar bombs and tens of thousands of other weapons and artillery shells to help Israel carry out military operations in Gaza.
In that report, the Wall Street Journal, quoting American officials, reported an increase in arms shipments from the United States to Israel, which included sending 15,000 bombs and 57,000 artillery shells shortly after The attack began on October 7 and is still ongoing.
The Wall Street Journal wrote that the transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars of ammunition by C17 military aircraft from the United States to Tel Aviv shows the diplomatic challenges facing the administration of President Joe Biden. On the one hand, the United States invites its main ally in the region to avoid increasing civilian casualties, but on the other hand, to provide Tel Aviv with many of the munitions through which those operations are carried out.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Contrary to its practice regarding the war in Ukraine, which publicly announces the statistics related to the shipment of arms, it has not published any statistics regarding arms transactions with Israel.
American officials have claimed that part of the reasons Washington’s silence in the story of arms aid to Israel is that the weapons sent to Tel Aviv happen through a different mechanism, including through military sales. In addition, Israel is the largest recipient of US military aid each year, receiving $3.8 billion annually.
