Japan’s NHK network reported that the plane, which took off from New Chitose Airport in Sapporo, Japan, collided with a Coast Guard plane, quoting the country’s officials.
According to the BBC report, quoting from this airline, all 379 passengers as well as the flight crew (about 400 passengers) got out safely. The company announced that “we are currently investigating the details of the cause of the accident and assessing the amount of damage.”
According to CNN, one of the passengers of the Coast Guard plane succeeded. He left, but the fate of the other five people is not known.
A Japan Coast Guard spokesman said the plane was en route from Handa Airport to the Coast Guard Air Base in Niigata Prefecture to help with relief efforts following Monday’s 7.5-magnitude earthquake.
