In an article, a German media focused on the minus 40 degree cold in Northern Europe and the problems it caused.
– International News – Tasnim news agency, Spiegel weekly reported on the extreme cold below 40 degrees in Northern Europe and the problems caused by it and wrote: Cold and frost below 40 degrees have covered northern Europe and created problems.

In the rest of this report, it is said that Scandinavia is shaking. Even Northern Europe is not used to such temperatures. In the shadow of this frost, even the traffic of trains has stopped because the air in the wagons may become very cold. In northern Europe there is a region called Scandinavia. The countries of this region include Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

This report continues: Even in Northern Europe, there has rarely been such a cold. A cold snap with freezing temperatures likely to remain in Scandinavia until Thursday 4th January. According to the Swedish Meteorological Institute SMHI, there is currently a high pressure area with very cold air in northeastern Sweden and northern Finland. In some areas, it has not been cold this winter for years.

To name a few examples: in the cultural city of Umeå, which is located on the north-eastern coast of Sweden, the lowest temperature in the last twelve years. It was not recorded, and in the village of Nikkaluokta, Sweden, a cold record was recorded in the past few days, which was minus 41.6 degrees Celsius. The temperature below minus 40 degrees Celsius was measured in three regions on Tuesday night.

The cold now has consequences for the traffic of trains in the north of this country, so that the traffic must be severely limited and sometimes even stop because it is very dangerous.

According to one of the managers of the regional railway company, the temperature below minus 35 degrees creates significant safety risks along the route. According to him, if the electricity is cut on the route, it will cause the wagons to cool down too much. This would be a huge risk for travelers – a risk he did not want to take.

Victor Gustafsson from Sorsele, Sweden, also had to close his ski lift due to the severe weather conditions. The operator of the ski lift says: “Currently, the temperature here is minus 27 degrees and it is getting colder by the hour. We stop working at minus 22 for safety reasons. In case of an accident, it may take a while for help to arrive, and of course we don’t want to risk frostbite.

The official cold record was measured in Sweden in 1966, which was minus 52.6 degrees. Albin Stjernbrandt, senior physician at Norland University Hospital, says that the temperature that can have health consequences is minus 30 degrees or colder, which affects the whole body. Breathing becomes difficult, you have to cough, blood pressure rises and the entire circulatory system is put under pressure. This senior doctor explains that in these conditions we are simply less efficient. And of course there is the risk of frost damage. According to him, the best protection against these conditions is to stay at home. He added: “If you still have to go out, you should do it as short as possible in the coming days, because the extreme cold is expected to continue in northern Sweden until the weekend.
