Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billström welcomed his country’s expected NATO membership in his speech at the National Society and Defense Organization Conference in Salen on Sunday, calling it “the biggest change in Sweden’s security policy in the past 200 years” he read.
He warned that Russia is a serious threat to the security of Sweden and Europe in the near future and added that Stockholm should be realistic and ready for a long confrontation.
The Minister of Defense of this country, Paul Johnson, repeated the same claims and said that “war can come to us” and claimed that “Ukraine acts as a shield for Europe in the conflict with Russia.” he does”.
Last year, citing the Russia-Ukraine war, Sweden submitted a request to join NATO, and its neighboring country Finland also joined NATO in April 2023.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson recently announced that 800 Swedish soldiers will be stationed in Latvia to reinforce 2,000 Canadian-led forces. Last year, in a speech at the same conference about his country’s role in NATO, he said, “It is possible to have nuclear weapons in our territory in peacetime”.
