The Social Democratic Party of Germany lost almost 15,000 members last year, a decline of 3.9 percent. The year before that, the party had 379,861 members.
The spokesman also said that 9,584 people joined the party last year – five per cent more than in 2022. So the decline in membership was mainly due to resignations and deaths. The spokesperson of the Social Democratic Party also said that the percentage of female members has increased in recent years and reached 33.56 percent at the end of 2022. Accordingly, twelve percent of the members of this party are currently under 35 years old. Most members are aged 60 and over – this group makes up around 58%.
The Social Democratic Party lost more members in one year than in 2019, according to the report. However, the party has seen a decline in membership for years: since the federal election at the end of 2021, the Social Democrats have lost around 28,500 members. Support for the so-called traffic light coalition is still collapsing. In a recent poll conducted by the Forsa Institute, the Social Democratic Party lost one point and is now at 13%, which is the worst number in these polls in almost four years.
