Eurasia: The border between Iran and Armenia is a symbol of friendship between the two nations

On Monday, an analytical website, referring to the strengthening of cooperation between Tehran and Yerevan, wrote that cooperation between Iran and Armenia is essential in dealing with sanctions.

According to the report of Fars News Agency International Group, the website “Eurasia” on Monday, in an analysis, pointed to the strong relations between Iran and Armenia from the past and wrote, while Armenia is traditionally a supporter of Russia and Iran, Iran also supports the rights of the Armenian minority. It was and is in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

This website wrote in a part of its analysis by “Matija Serik” that relations between Armenia and Iran have a history of a thousand years. The relationship between Iran and ancient Armenia dates back to the period of the Median Empire and the 6th century BC.

Tehran and Yerevan have had close relations since the independence of Armenia. The border between Armenia and Iran is 44 kilometers long and is one of the oldest borders in the world and a symbol of friendship between the two nations.

Today there is no territorial dispute between the two countries. The Armenian minority in Iran, one of the largest and oldest communities in the world, enjoys the recognition of the Iranian government.

In a part of this report, it is mentioned about Iran’s economic cooperation with Armenia. is: “In addition to the important Iran-Armenia gas pipeline that was completed in 2006, the two countries have also implemented other large projects, including the construction of two hydroelectric power plants on the Aras River”.

In 2014, the energy ministers of Iran and Armenia agreed to build a new transmission line from Armenia to Iran in an effort to strengthen energy relations. In June 2015, both countries agreed to start construction of the third transmission line.

In January 2021, Iran and Armenia signed a memorandum of understanding to expand trade relations. The trade between the two countries in 2021 has reached 471 million dollars.

“Matija Serik” further wrote: “Economic cooperation between Yerevan and Tehran is not a choice. Rather, it is a necessity in difficult situations. Bilateral trade is important for both countries for security reasons. Since independence in 1991, Iran has been under the sanctions of the West and Armenia under the trade blockade of Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan. The only open borders of Armenia are with Iran and Georgia. If they were closed, Armenia would be completely isolated from the rest of the world.” According to the report, the two countries agreed in August to extend the electricity contract based on Armenia supplies Iran with electricity in exchange for natural gas. This agreement has been in place since 2009 and was supposed to end in 2026, but in an improved form, it will continue at least until 2030.

“Matija Serik” then wrote: “From the diplomatic point of view, the Republic of Azerbaijan is an authoritarian and non-democratic country and its orientation is in favor of the West and Israel, while Armenia is traditionally in favor of Russia and Iran. Iran has been and is an explicit supporter of the rights of the Armenian minority in the Republic of Azerbaijan. : “This is a fact that no one, including the Republic of Azerbaijan, can ignore.”
