The spokesman of the Kremlin said on Wednesday, regarding Turkey's decision to approve Sweden's accession to NATO, that Ankara is a member of this alliance and therefore has obligations towards it. |
According to the Fars News Agency International Group, Kremlin Spokesman Dimitri Peskov said on Wednesday that Turkey’s agreement to Sweden’s request in NATO is “Ankara’s independent decision”.
According to the news agency “Anatolia” Peskov said at a press conference in Moscow that Turkey is a member of NATO and therefore has obligations towards this military alliance.
According to this report, the Turkish parliament approved Sweden’s membership on Tuesday with 287 votes in favor against 55 votes against. Hungary is now the only NATO member country that has not signed the accession of this Northern European country to NATO. Turkey’s parliament announced that the country’s presence in this military alliance will make it stronger and safer. Finland and Sweden, both northern European countries and close Bordering Russia, they applied for NATO membership after the start of Moscow’s war against Ukraine in February 2022. Turkey confirmed Finland’s membership of the alliance in March but said it was waiting for Sweden to adhere to a June 2022 tripartite memorandum to address Ankara’s security concerns. Any new NATO member must be approved by all current members, including Turkey, which has been a member of the alliance for more than 70 years.
Earlier, a Turkish news site warned that the delay of the country’s parliament in the final approval of Sweden’s membership in NATO has brought Ankara’s relations with Washington to a standstill. .
