The meeting of senior US and Chinese officials in Thailand
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan held a new round of talks between the two countries yesterday and today in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. |
This meeting was held while just two months ago, US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia Economic Cooperation Summit. – Oceania met and discussed each other in San Francisco.
Washington and Beijing had a difficult relationship at the beginning of 2023, but in the second half of the year before the transfer of power in Taiwan in May and the US presidential election, they tried to to create stability in bilateral relations.
Some claim that China’s difficult economic situation may have eliminated Beijing’s desire for a more severe relationship with Washington, although on the other hand, China has improved its relations with has promoted Russia.
According to the statement of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang told Sullivan in this meeting that the two countries should treat each other as equals and respect their important interests instead of undermining them, as well as mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation. Wang added that Taiwan is part of China’s internal affairs and the recent elections there cannot change the fundamental truth that Taiwan is part of China. The reason why the US warship passed through the sensitive waterways that separate China from Taiwan, criticized Washington for creating trouble and provocation. Also, the Wall Street Journal newspaper wrote on Thursday, quoting informed sources: Sullivan Chinese officials in Thailand will discuss Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. The Biden administration wants Beijing to convey messages to Iran to prevent a wider conflict.
