10 European Union countries have nuclear power reactors
The EU energy commissioner announced the formation of an industrial alliance of 10 European countries to develop reactors for small and modular nuclear power plants to generate nuclear electricity. |
The goal of the coalition, which according to Kadri has been participated in by about ten European Union countries, is small nuclear power plants. According to the EU official, the idea is for the reactors of such plants to be prefabricated in a modular factory and then installed.
He stressed that modular nuclear plants can be “much more flexible than new buildings.” They can “step by step replace electricity generation with fossil fuels and provide heat for municipalities and industry. In the European Union, in addition to France, especially many eastern member states rely on nuclear energy.
In the coming years, France also wants eight nuclear power plants in addition to the six that were previously planned. and therefore much more than previously planned.
In this way, France wants to reduce the share of fossil fuels in energy consumption from more than 60% currently to 40% in 2035. According to the French Minister of Energy, this goal requires the construction of additional power plants with an output of 13 gigawatts from 2026.
