England: Trump’s statements about NATO are not rational
The British Foreign Minister described the statements of the leading candidate of the American Republican Party about NATO as "irrational". |
According to the report of Fars International News Agency, “David Cameron”, the British Foreign Minister, said that Donald Trump’s statement that the US support for NATO allies is conditional on the countries’ defense budgets is not considered a “rational approach”.
David Cameron is the first cabinet minister of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to publicly criticize the statements of the leading candidate of the Republican Party in the US elections.
The British Prime Minister’s Office emphasized shortly after Cameron’s remarks that Sonak is confident that the United States will be a reliable ally regardless of who wins the election.
Trump has repeatedly threatened NATO members in recent days. In his latest highly controversial speech on Saturday, he said that if he becomes president, he will encourage Russia to do whatever it wants with NATO members who do not pay their dues in the alliance.
He said, “NATO was destroyed by the time I came into office. I told everyone they have to pay (the fees) they said if we don’t pay you will still support us? I answered definitely not. They didn’t believe my answer.
Trump continued: “The president of a great country asked me if we don’t pay (the fees) and are attacked by Russia, will America still leave the country?” Will we defend? I told that president that I will not support you, in fact I will encourage them (Russia) to do whatever they want. You have to pay the costs.
Trump’s comments come as US lawmakers debate whether to grant more aid to Ukraine on the second anniversary of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. However, the former US president has repeatedly stated that his country’s commitment to defend 30 other NATO member countries is unfair.
