Hungary announced the imminent approval of Sweden’s accession to NATO in its parliament
Hungary's prime minister said his country's parliament could approve Sweden's NATO membership later this month. |
Viktor Orban said about the process of approving Sweden’s membership in the NATO military alliance: “The good news is that our dispute with Sweden will be resolved soon. We are moving in the direction where we can approve Sweden’s accession to NATO at the next session of the parliament.”
According to Reuters, the Prime Minister of Hungary said that together with the Prime Minister of Sweden, Olof Kristerson, they have taken steps to “restore trust” between the two countries.
Sweden officially applied to join NATO in May 2022. Since then, Hungary has been the only NATO member country that has not yet approved Sweden’s request in its parliament.
Orban, who has better relations with Russia than other European Union countries and most NATO members, has repeatedly said that his government supports Sweden joining the alliance. However, Sweden’s accession plan has been at an impasse for approval by the country’s parliament for a long time.
The next session of the Hungarian Parliament is expected to be held on February 26 (late this month).
