What was Grossi looking for in the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union?

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency attended the monthly meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union today (Monday) at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium.

Less than 2 weeks before the periodic meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, “Rafael Grossi”, the director general of this organization, met with the heads of European diplomatic institutions in Brussels and discussed the impact of the last He discussed geopolitical developments on nuclear safety issues.

By publishing messages on the X social network (former Twitter), he explained that during detailed discussions with European diplomats, he discussed “the activities of the Agency to promote nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, as well as strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation system.”

Grossi also published pictures of his meeting with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Poland and wrote that in these meetings he discussed the country’s plans to develop nuclear activities as well as the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency also discussed with the Prime Minister of Belgium the preparations for holding the first high-level summit on nuclear energy, which is scheduled to be held on March 21 in Brussels.

Meeting with Stephen Clement, the European Commission’s special adviser on Iran’s nuclear case, is one of the other plans of the IAEA Director General in Brussels.

He did not mention the details of the conversation with Clement and simply congratulated him on his new position as a special representative of the European Commission in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

Clement was the ambassador of the European Union to international organizations based in Vienna until last September. On the eve of the meeting of the Council of Governors, he gave up his seat to Carl Hallgard and continued his activities as a special adviser to the European Commission in the Iran nuclear case.

On the other hand, Rafael Grossi has recently been in the spotlight against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and has made statements that are fundamentally contrary to his responsibility.

Not long ago, he made controversial statements about “JCPOA II” and the necessity of concluding a new nuclear agreement with Iran, and then he claimed that the agreement of March last year, known as the March 4th statement, has not made any progress.

Reacting to this issue, Behrouz Kamalondi, the spokesperson of the Atomic Energy Organization, emphasized that the director general of the agency should avoid emotional statements and targeted reports that are not within his responsibility, in order to prevent the West from creating propaganda against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program. He clarified: Mr. Grossi’s duty is limited to the framework of technical measures and he must present real reports and away from emotions.

According to the announced schedule, the next round of the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency is scheduled to be held on March 4th (March 14th) in Vienna. This is the one thousand six hundred and seventy-fifth meeting of the Council of Governors, and according to previous periods, various issues about nuclear safety and the implementation of the safeguard agreement are on the council’s agenda.
