Ecuador stopped sending weapons to Ukraine
Ecuador's foreign minister said despite his government's previous plans, the country will not send old Soviet-era military equipment to Ukraine. |
Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld told a group of parliamentarians: Ecuador will not send any weapons to a country that is involved in an international armed war.
According to Rasha Today, Ecuador’s foreign minister stressed that the country is looking for a “peaceful solution” to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine based on international law.
Previously, the president of Ecuador, Daniel Nuboa, announced that he plans to give his Soviet-era military equipment to Ukraine in exchange for receiving modern equipment from the United States worth $200 million.
Soviet-made equipment in Ecuadorian warehouses includes Mi-17 helicopters and Osa anti-aircraft systems.
Moscow strongly condemned this plan and said that the transfer of military equipment to a third party without Russia’s consent is a violation of the contract. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Ecuadorian media that Quito made a “hasty decision” under foreign pressure.
