This will allow authorities to deal with the most serious cases of instrumental migration, according to the ministry. The ministry did not provide any details in this regard. The Helsinki government closed its border crossings with Russia last year and in February extended the closure until April 14. This Scandinavian country accuses Russia of deliberately smuggling migrants to Finland. The Moscow government denies this charge. Thus, at the end of November, the Finnish government reacted by closing its borders with Russia to the increasing number of immigrants crossing these borders. Russia and Finland have a land border of about 1300 km. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated sharply since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine in February 2022. In April, Finland joined the NATO military alliance after decades of neutrality. Moscow condemned joining this military coalition as an “attack on Russian security”.
A while ago, the Estonian government also announced that it will close its borders with Russia to stop the influx of migrants.
