The UN’s emphasis on continuing efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza

The spokesman of the UN Secretary General said: The UN continues its efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza after the US veto.

UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Tuesday night that the UN is committed to continuing to press for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza after the United States vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution.

The United States on Tuesday blocked a UN Security Council resolution proposed by Algeria calling for an emergency humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

13 members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of this resolution, England abstained and the United States, as a permanent member, vetoed this resolution.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Greenfield rejected any ceasefire until the release of Israeli prisoners, claiming that the draft resolution was not “an effective mechanism”.

By vetoing another resolution calling for a cease-fire in Gaza, the United States proved that it does not want West Asia peace and is only interested in its own geopolitical pursuits, according to Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, on Tuesday.

Before voting on the resolution, Nebenzia told the Security Council that Washington’s goal is not to achieve peace in the West Asia or to protect civilians, but to “advance its geopolitical agenda and ask its closest ally in the West Asia to be shielded at any cost.” »

Nebenzia called Algeria’s draft resolution “strong” and “balanced”.

The representative of China in the United Nations, Zhang Jun, expressed regret and disappointment that the Algerian draft resolution was not approved.
