America sanctions more than 500 Russian individuals and institutions

The US Treasury Department announced on Friday that it will sanction more than 500 individuals and entities involved in Russia's war against Ukraine.

A spokesman for the US Treasury Department told AFP early Friday that these sanctions target “Russia, its supporters and the war machine” of this country.

Meanwhile, a senior US diplomat said Washington would impose “hundreds and hundreds and hundreds” of new sanctions on Moscow to mark the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine and following the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

According to Reuters, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said on Thursday that some of these sanctions will target the people responsible for Navalny’s death and most of them will target “Putin’s war machine”.

Navalny, a well-known critic of the Russian government, who was serving his sentence in a prison in the Yamalo-Nenets region of Russia, died last Friday. Ryanovsi news agency reported that he felt bored after a walk and immediately lost consciousness.

Noland added that the sanctions also target countries and banks that help Russia circumvent sanctions.

In a speech at the Center for International and Strategic Studies think tank in Washington, he said: “In the coming days, we will impose a new package of crushing sanctions, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of sanctions, some of which will target the people involved in Navalny’s death.” /p>
Acknowledging that the current sanctions have failed to weaken the Russian defense industry, Nuland added that the new sanctions aim to weaken Putin’s war machine.

On February 21, 2022 (March 2, 1400), the President of Russia recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics in the Donbas region, criticizing the West’s inattention to Moscow’s security concerns.

Three days after that, on Thursday, February 24 (March 5, 1400), Vladimir Putin launched a military operation against Ukraine, which he called a “special operation”, and thus the tense relations between Moscow and Kiev turned into a military confrontation.

In response to this Russian action, America and Western countries have imposed extensive sanctions against Moscow and sent billions of dollars of weapons and military equipment to Kiev.
