Britain donates scrap cars to Ukraine
The UK is donating 4x4 vehicles linked to the scrapping scheme for humanitarian and medical use in Ukraine. |
Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, finally allowed the cars scrapped according to the Ulez plan to be sent to Ukraine for medical and humanitarian services.
The Mayor of London confirmed that Transport for London (TfL) has been ordered to amend the Very Low Emission (Ulez) scrapping scheme to allow non-compliant 4x4s to be used in Ukraine to support humanitarian and medical efforts. .
This comes after Transport Secretary Mark Harper suggested the cars be sent to Ukraine. The Telegraph previously revealed how in September last year Sadiq Khan rejected an offer from Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko to send some non-compliant vehicles to Ukraine instead of scrapping them.
Khan initially said he believed it was not possible to change Olles’ plan to export vehicles under current rules, which state drivers can receive a one-off payment of £2,000 if they scrap a low-polluting vehicle.
Now, five months after the idea of sending cars to Ukraine was first proposed, Transport for London will make the necessary changes to allow the cars. This comes after Harper told Khan there was no “legal impediment” to donating Oles scrapped vehicles to Ukraine.
Khan says the plans, which could be implemented within weeks, will help meet medical and humanitarian needs while helping to remove polluting older vehicles from London’s roads.
Applicants can donate cars that do not meet the Olles scheme in exchange for a £2,000 grant to send to Ukraine.
London Ambulance Service (LAS) plans to join the cause by donating 50 decommissioned ambulances to Ukraine – 10 in the next few weeks and another 40 by the end of the summer.
The scrapping scheme is open to all Londoners with an eligible non-Owls vehicle and plays a key role in the mission to clean up London’s toxic air.
