The European Union extended the sanctions against Belarus

The Council of Europe announced in a statement that the European Union has extended the previous sanctions against Belarus for another year.

The Council of Europe announced today (Monday) and following the parliamentary elections in Belarus, that the European Union will extend the sanctions against this country until February 28, 2025.

Sputnik news agency reported that the Council of Europe announced in a statement: Today, the Council decided to extend restrictive measures related to internal repression in Belarus and the regime’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine for another year until February 28. 2025 should be extended.

Until now, EU sanctions against Belarus have targeted 233 individuals and 37 institutions, which has led to the blocking of the assets of these individuals and institutions and the prohibition of financial transactions with them. These bans also include travel bans for real people.

The statement of the Council of Europe states: Belarus is still subject to economic sanctions, including restrictions in financial, trade, dual-use goods, technology, telecommunications, energy, transportation and other areas.

After Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, remained in power for the sixth consecutive term, which was also accompanied by widespread protests, relations between Minsk and Western countries worsened. The West has gradually imposed sanctions on Belarusian officials and businesses, accusing Minsk of election fraud and human rights violations, which Belarus has denied. These sanctions were extended due to Minsk’s support for Russia’s attack against Ukraine.
