Hungary approves Sweden’s accession to NATO
Today Monday, the Hungarian Parliament approved Sweden's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). |
Sweden’s accession to NATO comes 21 months after Sweden and Finland sought NATO membership following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Hungary’s approval marks a significant shift in NATO dynamics, particularly with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and concerns about Russia’s broader intentions.
Sweden’s accession to NATO is a vital step in strengthening the defense of the eastern flank of this alliance, especially after the accession of Finland, the border of NATO member countries with Russia was doubled.
Meanwhile, Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson called the moment of approval of Sweden’s accession to NATO in the Hungarian Parliament “historic”.
Kristersson wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: The parliaments of all NATO member states have now voted in favor of Sweden joining NATO. Sweden is ready to take responsibility for Euro-Atlantic security.
This confirmation came after Kristerson met with his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orbán, during which the two countries agreed on Budapest’s purchase of Swedish-made Gripen sub-jet fighter jets.
