Moscow’s position on the terms of the peace talks should be reviewed

The former ambassador of Ukraine in Germany announced that Kiev's allies should examine Moscow's position on the terms of peace talks.

Melnik in an interview with Tagus newspaper Spiegel said: “My personal opinion is that our allies should calmly check whether there is a real desire in Moscow to reach an agreement.”

The former ambassador emphasized that “conducting preliminary negotiations does not mean abandoning interests.”

Melnyk at the same time stressed that “from Ukraine’s point of view, it is impossible to reach an agreement. However, partners should use their diplomacy.

It should be noted that the first talks between Russia and Ukraine after the start of special military operations were held in Belarus in early March 2022, but did not bring any concrete results.

On March 29 of the same year, the next round took place in the Turkish city of Istanbul, when Moscow received from Kiev for the first time the principles of a possible future agreement written on paper. .

This agreement, among other things, included commitments regarding Ukraine’s neutral and non-committal status and the country’s refusal to deploy weapons of foreign countries, including nuclear weapons, on its soil. However, Kiev quickly backed away from what was agreed upon and then issued a law banning negotiations with Russia.
