A nuclear weapons facility in Texas has been shut down due to widespread forest fires in the region.
The Pantex nuclear facility, which is active in the manufacture and production of nuclear weapons, announced that it was closed due to a forest fire near this facility.
The Pantex facility, located 21 miles east of Amarillo, which assembles and disassembles US nuclear weapons, said it has shut down until further notice. It is said that more than 20,000 plutonium cores for intercontinental ballistic missiles are stored in this center.
According to the announcement of this company, the fire near Pantex has not been contained. The facility has evacuated its forces and a small number of non-essential personnel have taken shelter on site.
The largest fire in the region has burned nearly 400 square miles, the Texas Fire Department said Tuesday. Four wildfires in the Texas Panhandle, fueled by hot weather and strong winds, have burned more than 24,000 acres and continue to prompt evacuations, road closures and emergency declarations.
