Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman of the UN Secretary General, after the UN Security Council’s inconclusive meeting on Afghanistan, stated that the consultations are still ongoing for the selection of a special envoy for Afghanistan.
Declaring that there is no timetable for appointing this envoy, he emphasized: This issue is taken very seriously and quickly, and we will announce as soon as we have someone.
On December 29, the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution on how to increase engagement with Afghanistan and the Taliban leaders and to appoint a special representative for Afghanistan.
In this resolution, the UN Secretary General is asked to appoint a special representative in consultation with a wide range of actors regarding Afghanistan, and after 60 report to this council every day.
