Most of the French people disagree with Macron’s proposal to send troops to Ukraine
According to polls, the vast majority in France rejected Macron's proposal to send troops to Ukraine. |
More than two-thirds of French people believe that French President Emmanuel Macron was wrong to say that NATO could one day send troops to support Kiev in its conflict with Moscow, according to a new poll. is.
Results of a poll published on Thursday by French newspaper Figaro showed that 68 percent of respondents disagreed with Macron’s comments on the deployment of NATO troops in the war-torn country, while only 31 percent said they agreed. The others had no opinion.
Other key countries in the NATO military bloc similarly opposed Macron’s comments, which were made on Monday after a meeting of European leaders in Paris.
In the days that followed, the United States, Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany and other major members of the North Atlantic bloc quickly announced that there were still no plans to deploy NATO forces to Ukraine.
However, some smaller members of the NATO bloc – namely the Baltic states of Estonia and Lithuania – appear to be backing Macron, with senior officials from both countries suggesting that sending troops to Ukraine should not be ruled out.
Moscow strongly condemned Macron’s comments and warned NATO against further hostile actions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that a direct confrontation between the alliance and Russia would not only be “possible” but “inevitable” if NATO forces were indeed deployed in Ukraine.
