Expressing Armenia’s readiness to sign a peace agreement with the Republic of Azerbaijan
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia says: If the Republic of Azerbaijan shows political will, Yerevan is ready to sign a peace agreement with this country. |
Vahan Kostanyan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, says that he has the necessary political will to normalize relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan based on the principles previously approved by both sides.
According to Reuters, he continued: “Now, if the Azerbaijani side is really interested in peace, we just have to agree to have these principles written by the authorities (on paper) and sign it.”
This senior Armenian official stressed that the two sides should recognize each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Earlier on Wednesday, the foreign ministers of Germany, Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan met in Berlin to peacefully resolve the differences between the two sides.
Notably, Yerevan and Baku announced in December that they want to reach a peace agreement after decades of conflict, but no agreement has been signed between the two sides yet.
For a long time, the divisive issue between the two countries has been the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Baku forces conducted military operations in this area this summer and announced that they had “retaken” it. Following this incident, more than a hundred thousand Armenians living in Karabagh fled to Armenia.
