After more than three decades on the run, Berlin witnessed a dramatic event on Sunday morning, as German police said two men, Ernst Volker Staub and his colleague Burkhard Gerwig, former members of the far-left RAF group, They were arrested.
According to the newspaper Bild, the crime bureau in the state of Lower Saxony confirmed the arrest of two men as part of the search campaign for these wanted persons. The German newspaper reported that an advanced facial recognition program aided by artificial intelligence led to the arrest of the two men after years on the run. Berlin police said around 130 police officers were deployed to search for the suspects, Ernst Volker Staub and Burkhard Gerwig.
Ernst Volker Staub and Burkhard Gerwig were members of the third generation of the former Rote Armee Fraktion (RAF). During their tenure, Alfred Herrhausen, the head of Deutsche Bank, was assassinated in 1989, and the head of the German Guarantee Organization was seriously injured in 1991.
The origin of this group goes back to the protest movement in West Germany. In the late 1960s, the industrialized countries, including West Germany, saw the turmoil of women’s liberation and anti-imperialism.
