According to Kyodo news agency, a joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States will be held to deal with emergency situations on the Korean peninsula.
The Chief of Staff of the South Korean Army stated in this regard: This joint exercise called “Freedom Shield” will continue from today to 11 days later with the holding of 48 training operations.
The South Korean army listed the detection and shooting down of North Korean cruise missiles as one of the other objectives of this exercise.
Military officials of Seoul and Washington emphasized in a press conference last week that this joint exercise will be held to deal with Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile threats using land, air, sea, cyber and space forces.
On February 19, following the increase in the military and political movements of the United States and its allies on the borders of North Korea, the official media of Pyongyang announced that the Supreme Assembly of this country canceled all agreements with South Korea in the field of development and promotion of economic cooperation.
Last month, Pyongyang called South Korea its main enemy and dissolved and threatened all institutions and organizations that worked for the reunification of the two Koreas.
The former president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, stopped these exercises five years ago in order to improve relations between Seoul and Pyongyang, but the current president of the country, Yun Suk-yeol, resumed the “Freedom Shield” exercises.
