Grossi: I have no information or proof that Iran is seeking to build nuclear weapons

IAEA director general said: “I hope to have a personal conversation with them (the Iranians) as soon as possible.” If they don’t invite me, I can’t go [to Tehran]. So, whenever they feel they’re ready to talk to me, I’ll be more than happy to go back there.” He will travel to Tehran. A few days later, Iran rejected the offer of Rafael Grossi’s visit to discuss nuclear activities, and instead, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said that Grossi had been invited to participate in a conference in Tehran in May.

In today’s press conference, which was held after the quarterly meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, Grossi expressed his concern about what he read in various interviews regarding the “gap in knowledge” as a result of Iran’s withdrawal from fulfilling its commitments in the JCPOA.

He clarified: “I have doubts about the ability of my investigators to be able to put the pieces of this kind back together again. “Without it, it will be difficult to formulate another nuclear agreement.” Despite this, he said that it is not “impossible” to “reconstruct” knowledge about Iran’s nuclear activities.

The Director General of the IAEA has already claimed many times in various interviews that the compensatory measures taken by Iran after the withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA have damaged the continuity of information provided by the inspectors of this international organization about Iran’s nuclear facilities and activities.

The Islamic Republic of Iran reduced some of its obligations after Western countries withdrew from their obligations under the JCPOA, according to the provisions of this agreement.

Grossi further said that he has no information that Iran is building nuclear weapons. He said: “I have no information that Iran is building nuclear weapons. But I hear what they say and I ask questions.”

He added: “And secondly, what I am saying is that Iran is the only country that has nuclear weapons. It does not have and is enriching at the level of 60% and is stockpiling uranium enriched at the level of 60%.” We must take the statements of the Iranian authorities about the nuclear advance very, very seriously, especially what is proposed by the government officials. He addressed the issue of canceling the appointment of French and German inspectors of the Atomic Energy Agency and said, “I am disappointed with Iran’s failure to cancel its decision to re-appoint the inspectors of the Agency.” I decided not to call for an emergency meeting of the Board of Governors because I thought that this issue could be resolved bilaterally.”
