Iravani: America’s obstruction of the Security Council’s duties has been in conflict with the world’s requests to end the bloodshed
Our country's ambassador to the United Nations said: The United States shamefully used its veto right against this resolution. The actions of the United States government in this regard will undoubtedly not be forgotten by nations and history. |
According to Tasnim News Agency, Amir Saeed Irvani, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations At the General Assembly meeting regarding: “Use of the veto” under agenda 63 regarding the veto of the ceasefire resolution by the United States, Thamidh said: The United States shamefully used its veto right against this resolution. The actions of the United States government in this regard will undoubtedly not be forgotten by nations and history.
The text of the speech of the representative of Iran is as follows:
A few days ago, the international community once again witnessed another unfair use of the veto by the United States during the voting of the draft resolution (S/2024/ 173) presented by Algeria, which called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. Despite widespread support from member states and nations around the world, the United States shamefully used its veto against the resolution. The actions of the US government in this regard will undoubtedly not be forgotten by nations and history.
The Islamic Republic of Iran appreciates the valuable efforts of Algeria in the Security Council, especially in dealing with the current situation in Gaza. We appreciate their initiative in presenting a strong draft resolution aimed at achieving the long-awaited ceasefire. We also express our gratitude to the 13 members of the Council who voted in favor of the draft resolution supporting the ceasefire in Gaza.
The deteriorating situation in Gaza has attracted widespread attention in the international community. The Israeli regime uses starvation as a deliberate method of war against the civilian population of Gaza. Unfortunately, the silence of the Security Council has turned into a license to kill and starve the Palestinian people.
In addition, the international community has condemned the Israeli regime’s decision to attack Rafah, which has had dire consequences for this densely populated area. , is extremely worried. In addition, the actions of the Israeli regime in Lebanon and Syria, which are contrary to international law and the United Nations Charter, have intensified tensions and increased concerns about instability in the region.
Islamic Republic of Iran It strongly condemns the recent brutal attack by Israeli regime forces against Palestinian civilians who were trying to receive humanitarian aid. This deliberate attack has killed 117 and wounded around 750 civilians. All this cruelty has happened in the absence of a ceasefire which is requested by many. We must address exactly the obstacle that the world has witnessed and that has hindered the efforts of the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities.
It is unfortunate that the United States has decided to turn a blind eye to the facts and unabashedly support the ongoing genocide of the Israeli regime. America even ignores global requests. Aaron Bushnell’s self-immolation in Washington last week shows how the world’s conscience has been deeply wounded by the violence against the Palestinians, and how the American people are ashamed of the policies of their rulers.
The United States’ obstruction of the Council’s mandate under the Charter is in stark contrast to global calls for an end to the bloodshed, challenges the innate human nature to preserve life, and violates fundamental principles of international law, including humanitarian and humanitarian law. It violates human rights.
Even the implausible justification offered by US officials for committing such wrongful acts under the guise of self-defense, regardless of their illegitimacy, dissuades the Israeli regime from adhering to its most fundamental values. Humanity, the principles of international law and the rules of Amrah, the international humanitarian law that protects women, children and unarmed civilians during war, exempts and has caused the war machine of the Israeli regime to continue its attacks against Palestinian civilians.
We reiterate our call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, without which the tragedy will worsen and could lead to the loss of innocent lives, including children and women. The most important necessity is to quickly implement a ceasefire to prevent widespread hunger in Gaza.
We must reiterate the urgency of implementing obligations under international humanitarian law and the interim measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on January 26, 2024. These measures are necessary to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
In conclusion, Mr. Chairman, given the current impasse of the Security Council, I would like to consider the obligations of third parties under international law and interim measures. International Court of Justice on January 26, 2024. All member states are not only obliged to refrain from recognizing or assisting the Israeli regime in genocide, but also must take the necessary measures to prevent the war crimes and genocide of this regime. Therefore, we ask the international community and all independent countries to take the necessary measures to force the Israeli regime to stop the genocide and aggression against the Palestinian people. These measures may include collective and individual economic sanctions. In addition, the international community must pressure the Israeli regime to stop its violations and adhere to its international obligations.
