Venezuela finally set Chávez’s birthday as the time to hold presidential elections
Venezuela's Electoral Security Council finally set the birthday of the former president of this country, Hugo Chávez, to hold the presidential election. |
Venezuela’s Election Security Council, after considering various proposals of legislators and opposition groups, finally decided July 28, 2024 (7th August 1403), the birthday of the former president of this country, Hugo Chávez, to hold presidential elections. According to Reuters, Elvis Amoroso, head of the National Election Council, said on Tuesday night that the body “evaluated the various proposals for holding elections and reviewed all technical and legal conditions.”
The day set for the election is the birthday of Hugo Chávez, who died in 2013. Tuesday was the 11th anniversary of his death. Legislators affiliated with the Venezuelan government, opposition groups and other groups last week proposed different days to hold presidential elections.
The Venezuelan government and opposition agreed last October to hold presidential elections in the second half of 2024, each group would nominate their desired candidate and international observers would monitor it. But some members of the opposition expressed doubt that the Venezuelan government would adhere to this agreement.
Maria Corina Machado was the main candidate of the opposition to participate in the elections and compete with the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, but the Supreme Court of this country banned her from holding public positions in January.
This action caused the United States to return some of the canceled sanctions against Venezuela. Different groups have until March 25 (6th of April 1403) to introduce their candidates, but Machado has refused to introduce an alternative candidate for himself.
