According to television images, Mexican demonstrators stormed one of the doors of the presidential palace during demonstrations demanding justice for the 43 missing students.
According to Milenio TV, while Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was holding a press conference inside, dozens of demonstrators attacked the door using a truck.
The footage shows a group of people entering the grounds of the palace in Mexico City as security personnel try to disperse them with pepper spray before the situation calms down.
Presidential spokesman Jesus Ramirez said that the demonstrators only reached the entrance and did not enter the main building.
López Obrador described the incident as a very clear provocative plan and added: “They want us to respond with violence.” We don’t do that. We are not cruel.
The President of Mexico continued before the end of his press conference: The door will be repaired and there is no problem.
Several windows appeared to be broken, while phrases were written on the outer walls; Including: All we want is dialogue.
Although protesters have previously targeted the doors of the National Palace, which was built during the colonial period, this is believed to be the first time in recent years that protesters have managed to break through one of the doors.
Relatives and supporters of the missing students held various demonstrations in Mexico City, including a sit-in in front of the presidential palace, and demanded a meeting with López Obrador.
The case of teachers training students in the state of Guerrero in 2014 is considered one of the worst human rights crimes in Mexico. Before they disappeared, the students were on buses that left Guerrero state to participate in demonstrations in Mexico City.
Investigators believe they were abducted by a drug gang in collusion with corrupt police officers, although it is still unclear what exactly happened to them.
