Türkiye is preparing for extensive ground operations in northern Iraq
Some Turkish media revealed that the country's army is planning a large-scale ground operation in northern Iraq. |
The Turkish newspaper Hurriyet wrote that the country’s army is planning a large-scale ground operation against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq.
According to Hurriyet, an agreement has been reached with the central and local officials of Iraq about the implementation of this military operation. Abd al-Kader Silfi, a columnist close to the Turkish government, wrote: “First, a large-scale ground operation will be carried out in the Makhlab operation area.”
Silfi further claimed that before the start of the operation, an agreement was reached with the central government of Iraq and the government of Erbil, which is under the control of the Barzani family.
According to this newspaper, Ankara expects its entire 378-kilometer border with Iraq to be closed in front of those it calls “terrorists”.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that his country was planning to solve the border security issue with Iraq in the summer and was trying to establish a security crossing 30 to 40 kilometers deep in Syria.
