Asif Ali Zardari was elected today (Saturday) for a five-year term as the next president of Pakistan and replaces Arif Alavi.
Zardari, who was formerly the president of Pakistan, today competed with Mahmood Khan Achakzai, a veteran politician, for the position of the president of Pakistan and won.
According to Anatolia news agency, Pakistani lawmakers elected the new president for a five-year term. The ruling coalition in Pakistan had nominated Zardari as its candidate, while the opposition alliance council, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party led by Imran Khan, the imprisoned former prime minister, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, a veteran politician from Baluchistan province, was nominated as its candidate.
68-year-old Zardari was active as president from 2008 to 2013.
