Venezuela’s ruling “Socialist United” party officially chose the president of this country, Nicolas Maduro, as its candidate for the presidential election on July 28, 2024.

According to the AFP news agency, Diosdado Capello, who is the second leader of Venezuela’s ruling party, announced Tuesday morning on the X social network that the party chose Maduro as a candidate for the presidential election.

Venezuela’s Election Security Council last Tuesday, after reviewing various proposals from lawmakers and opposition groups, finally decided on July 28, the birthday of the former president of this country, Hugo Chavez, to hold presidential elections. Legislators affiliated with the Venezuelan government, opposition groups and others The groups had suggested different days to hold the presidential elections.

The Venezuelan government and opposition agreed last October to hold presidential elections in the second half of 2024, each group would nominate their desired candidate and international observers would monitor it. But some members of the opposition expressed doubt that the Venezuelan government would adhere to this agreement.

Maria Corina Machado was the main candidate of the opposition to participate in the elections and compete with the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, but the Supreme Court of this country banned her from holding public positions in January.

This action caused the United States to return some of the canceled sanctions against Venezuela. Different groups have until March 25 (6th of April 1403) to introduce their candidates, but Machado has refused to introduce an alternative candidate for himself.
