Yesterday, Monday, the Swedish flag was raised at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. Sweden’s flag was raised outside the NATO headquarters in Brussels on Monday, and the country officially became the 32nd member of NATO.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced at a press conference in Brussels after the approval of Sweden’s membership that this day is a historic day.
NATO Secretary General said that after 200 years of non-commitment, Sweden now enjoys the protection granted under Article 5 of NATO, guaranteeing the freedom and security of allies.
Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Kristerson announced in this press conference that Sweden has returned home.
The Swedish Prime Minister added that Sweden is now part of NATO – a proud member and ally, along with its closest friends and partners.
After the start of the war in Ukraine, Finland and Sweden submitted requests to join NATO in May 2022 for security reasons. Finland became the 31st member of NATO on April 4, 2023. As for Sweden’s request, Hungary has just agreed to this request.
