In April 2023, Novak pardoned some 22 people ahead of a visit by Pope Francis, including the deputy director of a children’s home who had helped his director cover up his crime. Reuters reported that the director was sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting minors between 2004 and 2016, while the deputy director was sentenced to three years.
