America’s reaction to Putin’s victory in the Russian elections
The United States reacted to the victory of Vladimir Putin in the Russian presidential election with more than 87% of the votes. |
Vedant Patel, the spokesperson of the US Department of State, said in response to a question about Putin’s re-election as president: I was nailed in place. This was a worrying issue.
Patel, referring to the elections in which Russia reported high participation, said: This was a completely undemocratic process.
In response to the question whether the United States has given these results to does he recognize it?, adding: I think it is safe to say that there will definitely not be a congratulatory message from the United States of America. The Russian president will stay, but that does not justify his autocracy.
The United States has had minimal contact with Putin since Russia went to war with Ukraine in February 2022.
The American reaction comes after similar criticisms from European allies, who questioned the conduct of the elections.
Russia’s Central Election Commission announced on Monday that Putin, the head of the current government, was able to win after reviewing the votes. He won 87.32 percent of the total votes.
