According to the foreign policy reporter of Tasnim News Agency, Ali Bahraini, the ambassador and representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Geneva, announced that Iran’s presidency of the disarmament conference in Geneva began on Monday, March 28.

His official account on Instagram wrote in this regard: Today I started my activities as the chairman of the disarmament conference. A meeting of the heads of the conference was held under the chairmanship of Iran.

Bahreini added: I also started bilateral negotiations with the aim of achieving a consensus work plan.

The 2024 session of the disarmament conference will be held based on the rules of the conference in the form of three sections of 10, 7 and 7 weeks from 2 Bahman 1402 to 23 Shahrivar 1403 (January 23 to September 13, 2024). The presidents of this year’s conference, in alphabetical order, include India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, and the Israeli regime.

As the third president of the conference, our country is presiding over this conference for 4 weeks from March 28 to April 10 and May 24 to June 4.

During its presidency, Iran plans to hold panels on some disarmament issues. Among the most important of them is the examination of challenges and obstacles to the realization of a Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction and negative security guarantees. The disarmament conference is the most important and the only multilateral pillar of the United Nations disarmament negotiations.

Disarmament documents and treaties, including the most recent Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, have failed to reach a consensus on important disarmament issues since 1996.

The agenda of the conference includes the following seven items:

1. Stopping the nuclear arms race and nuclear disarmament, 2. Preventing war nuclear including all related matters, 3. Prevention of arms race in space (PAROS), 4. Effective international arrangements to guarantee countries without nuclear weapons against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons (negative security guarantee), 5. New types of weapons. Mass killing and new systems of such weapons and radiological weapons, 6. Comprehensive disarmament program, 7. Transparency in weapons. Before the beginning of the presidency of the regime, he participated in the meetings of the six presidents of the conference known as P6 and has an active presence in the direction of realizing the interests of our country. P6 will not participate.

Iran attaches great importance to multilateralism in the work of the disarmament conference.
