New European Union sanctions against Russia
EU foreign ministers agreed to impose new sanctions against Russia's judicial system on the pretext of the death of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny. |
Thus, the European Union member states agreed on more sanctions against Russia in response to the murder of Alexei Navalny. According to the German news agency, citing diplomatic circles, the foreign ministers of the European Union countries decided on this in Brussels. Accordingly, the punitive measures of the European Union should be aimed at the representatives of the Russian justice system.
Navalny, a famous Russian opposition politician, died in a Russian prison camp under unknown circumstances in mid-February. European Union countries blame Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian authorities for Navalny’s death. His widow, Julija Navalnaya, believes that her husband was murdered in a prison camp in Siberia. People affected by these sanctions are no longer allowed to enter the EU or do business with EU citizens. In addition, their accounts and assets in the European Union should be frozen.
These sanctions are said to affect a large number of representatives of the Russian justice system. According to the plans, as soon as the sanctions are officially decided, probably in the coming days, their names will be published in the official journal of the European Union. They criticized the Russian presidential election. The focus was particularly on the fact that the elections were also held in the territories of Ukraine controlled by Russia. The EU criticized the elections in the Crimean peninsula and in parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions as another flagrant violation by Russia of international law – as well as the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin announced a similar statement before this.
EU countries also announced that the results of this election are not recognized and are invalid. Accordingly, this will have consequences for Russia’s political leadership as well as those involved in organizing elections in what they describe as occupied territories. According to diplomats, this could lead to further sanctions.
Foreign ministers of EU countries have also made a formal decision to continue joint financing of military equipment and training for Ukraine. Monday’s decision is intended to guarantee support services such as the delivery of weapons and ammunition worth at least five billion euros. A basic political agreement on this matter was already reached last week.
In particular, a special support fund for Ukraine is to be created within the framework of the so-called European Peace Facility (EFF). This financial instrument can be used to repay military aid to EU member states from Ukraine attacked by Russia and to pay for joint orders. EU foreign policy official Joseph Borrell expressed his satisfaction with this decision of the ministers on Monday. did He stated: The European Union fulfills its obligations. According to him, this support fund will continue to support Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s war with all means and as long as necessary.
