American newspaper: Burrell opposed the increase of sanctions on Iran

An American newspaper wrote: The European Union's foreign policy official, in opposition to Iran sanctions, considered the new sanctions as weakening diplomacy with Tehran.

The Wall Street Journal quoted last month’s letter from France, Germany, the Netherlands and five other EU countries to “Joseph Burrell” that the EU should impose new sanctions and allow those Iranian people who Allegedly, these countries arm, finance, advise and direct the region’s militias to target these groups.

According to this report, Burrell replied to this letter: Don’t do it now.

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal quoted European Union officials as saying that this reaction was supported by Washington.

This American newspaper also quoted an official of the Biden government and wrote that the European Union has been informed that Washington supports increasing pressure on Tehran through the embargo on the transfer of missiles and military equipment to regional militias as well as Russia.

According to this report, this disagreement, which opened up in the meeting of the European Union foreign ministers on Monday (March 28), was raised a few days after Europe and the United States pledged to deliver Iranian ballistic missiles. to Russia, quickly and jointly apply new sanctions against Tehran.

This is while Western officials said that there is no proof of delivery of these missiles, but they claimed that this action will take place based on predictions.

According to American officials, these sanctions could include measures to prevent Iran Air from flying to Europe.

Nevertheless, EU officials have told member states that action against Iran for supporting its allies could escalate tensions in the West Asia and undermine nuclear diplomacy.

According to this source, Burrell wrote last week in a letter to the eight member states of the European Union that their proposal to target Iran’s regional destabilizing activities combines the “two stages” of Russia and the West Asia, and this “could have consequences potentially unwanted.”

The Wall Street Journal read the recent situation as sensitive for Washington and added: It seems that both the United States and Iran are seeking to avoid direct conflict.

This American newspaper also claimed: While the Houthis (Ansarullah) and Iranian-backed militias in Syria and Iraq have been targeted by Washington and the military, America has resumed indirect negotiations with Tehran to curb tensions. American officials continue to emphasize that they are looking for a diplomatic solution regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

However, this publication quoted the letter of February 26 (March 7) of Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, wrote to Burrell that he asked the European Union to “impose more sanctions against Iranian institutions and individuals involved in military cooperation.” Join Washington on Iran’s growth with Russia, especially missile and drone cooperation.

A senior American official claimed that Blinken was unaware of the anti-Iranian pressures of France and Germany when he wrote the said letter.
