Türkiye and America agree on a new sanctions system against Russia

Turkey and the US have agreed that Turkish companies will do business with Russian companies while adhering to US sanctions against Moscow.

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported that Ankara and Washington agreed on a mechanism that would allow Turkish companies to do business with Russian companies while adhering to US sanctions against Moscow.

According to what this Turkish newspaper reported, this mechanism, called the Sanctions Coordination Plan, aims to protect Turkish companies from being exposed to secondary US sanctions due to cooperation with Russia.

Hurriyet newspaper quoted its sources as saying that according to this agreement, the US will inform Turkey before imposing sanctions on local companies suspected of circumventing the restrictions imposed on Russia, and will also request information from Ankara in this regard. .

In turn, Business FM radio pollsters believe that the Turkish authorities had the opportunity to inform their companies in time to close the communication channels with Russia that Washington discovered and to launch new channels that It allows these companies to avoid sanctions.

Turkey maintained economic and trade relations with Russia after the Ukraine war and refused to join Western sanctions against Russia despite Ankara’s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Last February, the media reported that officials of the US Department of Commerce visited Turkish companies and banks and threatened them with punishment due to their business relations with Russia. Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, Alexey Yerkhov, confirmed the same month that US officials are pressuring Turkish companies to cut ties with Moscow.
