World population growth will decline for the first time in the last 600 years
Forecasts show that in less than 3 decades, the world population will decline for the first time since the plague epidemic. |
A new study published in the “Lancet” magazine shows that by 2050, the world’s population growth will decline for the first time in the last 600 years, and the number of people will decrease instead of increasing.

According to the English newspaper Telegraph, the reason for the downward trend in the population is the decrease in the birth rate. It is said that to maintain population growth, each woman should have an average of 2.1 children. By 2021, this figure has reached 2.23 worldwide. Experts say that this number is continuously decreasing and is predicted to reach 1.83 in 2050 and 1.59 by 2100.
This means that in about 25 years, out of 204 countries in the world, 155 countries will have a lower than average birth rate (to maintain population). Also, in 13 countries, including South Korea and Bosnia and Herzegovina, women will have less than one child on average.
The last time the population growth trend in the world decreased was during the plague epidemic that occurred between 1347 and 1353 AD. This event, which is also known as the “Black Death”, caused the death of at least 50 million people.
Experts say the consequences of population decline for society will be “enormous” as the number of older people outnumbers the younger. As a result, the number of people receiving pension insurance will exceed the number of people in the workforce, leaving governments with a shortage of financial resources.
