The Guardian: America is a partner in creating the disaster of famine in Gaza

A Guardian columnist says the Biden administration deliberately allowed the disaster to happen when it could have prevented the famine in Gaza.

Mohammed Bazzi, Guardian columnist and professor of journalism at New York University, in an article for the Guardian newspaper, repeated the severe warnings issued about the hunger situation in Gaza and considered America to be the most important accomplice of the current situation in this besieged strip.

This analyst quoted a report by a UN-affiliated agency and wrote: “The people of Gaza are enduring catastrophic levels of hunger, and as Israel’s devastating war continues and the siege of the Palestinian land continues, famine is imminent in northern Gaza.” Although Israel bears most of the responsibility for this famine, it is not alone in this matter”.

The Guardian columnist wrote: “Joe Biden and his administration are also clearly complicit in this tragedy.” The United Nations and international aid groups have been warning of widespread starvation in Gaza since December (about three months ago). The Biden administration could have stepped in at that time and put pressure on Israel to send more aid to the land. Also, there is a law in America that if an ally prevents the sending of humanitarian aid, the government can stop sending weapons to it. But Biden did not implement this law. Instead, he and his assistants kept hesitating to implement this law, and now it is too late to prevent famine.”

The opportunity to prevent famine in Gaza was lost and the US knew it

The former New York University professor wrote: “The Biden administration and other supporters of Israel in the West cannot claim that they did not know the severity of the hunger crisis in Gaza and Israel’s policy of deliberately starving people.” The UN Hunger Monitoring Group warned in a December report that by early February, half of Gaza’s population would be in “emergency” nutritional status. In its latest report released on Monday, the group said that nearly half of Gaza’s population now faces the highest levels of malnutrition and catastrophic food shortages. The report stated that famine is imminent in northern Gaza and may occur from March to May.

Biden’s insistence on unconditional support of the criminal regime

Mohammed Bazzi continued to write: “Biden continued his strategy of unconditional support for Israel.” He hugged Benjamin Netanyahu during a trip to Tel Aviv in mid-October. A gesture that symbolizes the dysfunctional relations between America and Israel; Because Netanyahu and his hard-line ministers continue to openly defy America, their most important ally, without paying any price. Netanyahu continues to ignore Biden, and in the latest case, he told Zionist lawmakers on Tuesday that he plans to attack the city of Rafah despite US opposition.

America avoids using leverage

The Guardian columnist wrote at the end: “Biden is clinging to the failed policy of embracing Netanyahu and his right-wing cabinet.” Since October, the Biden administration has given Israel tens of thousands of bombs and other munitions. Until he uses his most effective lever of pressure, Netanyahu will continue to defy and humiliate America: Washington can force Tel Aviv to a cease-fire by not sending bombs and ammunition. Anything less will not absolve Biden and his administration of complicity in using hunger as a weapon and creating the catastrophe we are witnessing.”
